Global warming will destroy the Russian North

 

 

The destruction in the North of Russia, related to global warming could become catastrophic by 2030, said the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia Mr. Ruslan Tsalikov.  Such a new was published in the newspaper «Novye Izvestia».

 

«By 2030, in connection with global warming, the destructions’ scale could become catastrophic.

For example, more than a quarter of the housing stock (in the north of the country) may be subjected to destruction», - said Mr. Tsalikov during the conference which took place at  the Federation Council.

 

Over the past decade, the damage from natural disasters al over the world amounted to about 1 trillion dollars, more than 1 billion people have become victims of natural disasters. Over the past hundred years the average temperature on Earth has increased on one degree, while 40% of this warming occurred during the past ten years, said Mr. Tsalikov, All this represents a significant danger to Russia, two-thirds of which territories are in the permafrost zone.

 

The Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia Mr. Ruslan Tsalikov also noted that the Ministry would have two expeditions to the north of the country to test equipment and to develop special technologies in conditions of climate change. These expeditions will be sent to the area of Novaya Zemlya, Novosibirsk Islands and the mainland coast of the Arctic Ocean.

 

According to the Deputy Minister’s of Emergency Situations of Russia opinion, it is possible to solve the problem of protecting the northern territories within the federal target program for economic and social development of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of Russia.
